Getting a beautiful henna design is only half the experience. The other half is taking care of it properly so the stain develops into that deep, chocolatey brown that everyone loves. At Henna By Bowmi, we always walk our clients through aftercare, but having a written guide to refer back to makes the process much easier.
The most important rule is to leave the henna paste on your skin for as long as you can. We recommend a minimum of six hours, but overnight is ideal. The longer the paste stays in contact with your skin, the more dye it releases. Once you are ready to remove the paste, gently scrape or flake it off rather than washing it with water. Avoid soap and water on the design for at least 12 hours after removal.
Heat and moisture are your best friends during the first 24 hours. Lightly steam your hands over a pot of warm water (without getting the paste wet) or hold them near a warm surface. Some people wrap their designs with tissue and then medical tape before bed to keep the paste in place and warm overnight. A dab of lemon-sugar sealant applied once the paste dries can also help keep it from cracking off too soon.
After removing the paste, your stain will appear bright orange. Do not panic. This is completely normal. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the colour will oxidize and deepen to a rich reddish-brown. To help preserve the stain once it has developed, apply a thin layer of coconut oil or balm before showering, washing dishes, or swimming. Avoid exfoliating the area and limit contact with chlorinated water.
With proper care, most henna stains last between one and three weeks depending on placement. Hands and feet tend to stain the darkest because the skin is thicker there. Arms and other body areas may fade a bit sooner. If you have an upcoming event, we recommend scheduling your henna appointment one to two days before so the colour is at its peak.

Get in TouchYour wedding day is one of the most meaningful days of your life, and for many brides, mehndi is a cherished part of the celebration. Whether you are having a traditional South Asian wedding or simply love the beauty of henna art, bridal mehndi adds an elegant and personal touch to your look. At Henna By Bowmi, we have had the privilege of working with many Edmonton brides, and we are always honoured to be part of such a special moment.
One of the first decisions you will make is the style of your bridal mehndi. Traditional Indian designs tend to feature dense, intricate patterns covering the hands and extending up the forearms, often with detailed motifs like peacocks, florals, and paisleys. Arabic styles are a bit more open and flowing, with bold lines and negative space. Many brides today opt for a fusion approach that blends elements of both. During your consultation, we will talk about your outfit, your personal style, and any cultural elements you want to include so your design feels uniquely yours.
Timing is critical for bridal henna. We recommend scheduling your mehndi session two days before the wedding. This gives the paste enough time to develop its deepest colour while ensuring the stain is fresh and vibrant on the big day. A bridal session typically takes three to five hours depending on the complexity and coverage you want, so plan for a relaxed afternoon or evening. Many brides turn it into a mehndi party with close friends and family.
To prepare for your appointment, make sure your hands and arms are clean, free of lotions and oils, and freshly exfoliated a day or two beforehand. This helps the henna paste bond better with your skin. Avoid waxing or applying any products to the area on the day of your session. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be pushed up easily, and bring along a show or podcast to enjoy while you sit.
After your session, follow the aftercare steps closely for the best results. We provide all bridal clients with a sealant and detailed aftercare instructions. If you are planning a mehndi night, we can also arrange henna for your bridal party and guests. Reach out to us early, as bridal bookings during the busy summer season in Edmonton fill up quickly.

Get in TouchIf you have been exploring temporary body art, you have probably come across both henna and Jagua. While they are both natural, plant-based options for decorating the skin, they produce very different results. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right one for your needs, and at Henna By Bowmi we are happy to offer both services to our Edmonton clients.
Henna comes from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant and has been used for thousands of years across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. When applied as a paste and left to develop, it creates a warm, reddish-brown stain. The exact shade depends on your skin tone, the body area, and how well you follow aftercare. Henna works best on the palms, hands, and feet where the skin is thickest, and it typically lasts one to three weeks.
Jagua, on the other hand, comes from the fruit of the Genipa americana tree native to South America. It produces a blue-black stain that looks remarkably similar to a real tattoo. Jagua works well on most body areas and skin tones, including lighter skin where henna sometimes does not show up as vividly. The stain develops over 24 to 48 hours and lasts about one to two weeks.
So which should you choose? If you want a traditional mehndi look with warm, earthy tones, henna is the natural choice. It is perfect for weddings, cultural celebrations, and anyone who loves that classic mehndi aesthetic. Jagua is ideal if you want something that resembles a real tattoo or if you want body art on areas where henna does not stain as well, like the upper arm, back, or shoulder. Some clients even combine the two for a striking multi-toned design.
Both options are safe and natural when sourced from reputable suppliers. At Henna By Bowmi, we use only organic, chemical-free henna and genuine Jagua gel. We never use so-called black henna, which contains PPD and can cause serious skin reactions. If you are unsure which option is right for you, book a consultation and we will help you decide based on your skin tone, the occasion, and the look you are going for.

Get in TouchHenna has a history that stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of its use found in ancient Egypt, India, and the Middle East. The word mehndi comes from the Sanskrit word mendhika, referring to the henna plant itself. For centuries, henna has been used not just as body art but as a form of medicine, a cooling agent in hot climates, and a symbol of joy and celebration.
In South Asian cultures, mehndi plays a central role in weddings. The mehndi ceremony, often held the night before the wedding, is a joyful gathering where the bride and her loved ones celebrate with music, food, and the application of elaborate henna designs. The depth of the bride's mehndi stain is traditionally said to represent the strength of her bond with her partner. Bridal mehndi often includes hidden initials or names within the pattern, a playful tradition that the couple can enjoy discovering together.
Mehndi is also an important part of celebrations like Eid, Diwali, Karva Chauth, and other festivals across Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh communities. In many North African and Middle Eastern traditions, henna is applied during celebrations for its blessings and protective qualities. Moroccan and Sudanese henna styles have their own distinctive geometric and bold patterns that differ from the fine, detailed work typical of Indian mehndi.
Here in Edmonton, we are fortunate to have such a diverse and multicultural community. At Henna By Bowmi, we draw on design traditions from across the globe, from classic Indian motifs to Arabic flowing patterns to contemporary fusion styles. We believe that understanding the cultural roots of mehndi makes the experience richer and more meaningful, whether you are continuing a family tradition or discovering henna art for the first time.
No matter the occasion, applying mehndi is a moment of connection. It asks you to slow down, sit still, and be present while something beautiful takes shape on your skin. That meditative quality is something people have valued for millennia, and it is just as meaningful today as it was thousands of years ago.

Get in TouchWhether you are hosting a birthday party, a baby shower, a corporate team event, or a cultural celebration in Edmonton, a henna station adds a unique and interactive element that guests of all ages enjoy. At Henna By Bowmi, we have brought henna to events of every size, from intimate gatherings in Windermere living rooms to large-scale festivals in Hawrelak Park.
The first step in planning event henna is to think about your guest count and how many people will want henna. For most casual events, we estimate that about 60 to 70 percent of guests will want a design. Simple designs like a small finger pattern or wrist cuff take about five to ten minutes each, while more elaborate pieces can take longer. We will work with you to determine the right amount of time and whether additional artists are needed to keep the line moving.
For parties with children, we offer a selection of fun, age-appropriate designs like butterflies, stars, flowers, and small mandalas that kids love. These quick designs keep the line moving and ensure every child gets a turn. For adult events, guests can choose from a range of styles or request something custom. We always bring inspiration boards and sample images so people can pick a design they love.
Logistics are straightforward. We bring all our own supplies and need only a small table and chair in a well-lit area. Outdoor events work beautifully, especially in Edmonton's lovely summer months, though we recommend having a shaded spot so the paste does not dry too quickly in the sun. For winter events, any indoor space with good lighting works perfectly.
To get the best availability, especially during Edmonton's busy wedding and festival season from May through September, we recommend booking at least three to four weeks in advance. We offer flexible packages based on the number of hours and artists you need. Reach out through our contact page to tell us about your event, and we will put together a custom quote that fits your celebration perfectly.

Get in TouchApplying henna at home can be a fun and rewarding experience, whether you are practising for yourself or decorating friends and family. Many of our clients at Henna By Bowmi enjoy picking up a cone to try simple designs between professional appointments, and we love encouraging that creative spirit. Here are our top tips for getting great results with DIY henna.
Start with quality cones. Fresh, organic henna paste makes an enormous difference. Look for cones that list henna powder, lemon juice, sugar, and essential oils as the main ingredients. Avoid anything that lists chemicals or PPD. If you are in Edmonton, ask us about our recommended suppliers, or pick up cones at a local South Asian grocery store. Check the packaging date and store unused cones in the freezer to keep them fresh. Thaw a cone at room temperature for about 30 minutes before use.
Before you start on skin, practise your lines on paper or a practice pad. Hold the cone like a pen, about a centimetre from the tip, and squeeze gently from the back rather than the middle. Consistent pressure gives you smooth, even lines. Start with simple shapes like dots, teardrops, and basic florals before attempting more complex patterns. Watching tutorial videos can help you understand the flow and rhythm of common mehndi motifs.
Preparation is key for a good stain. Clean the skin with soap and water, and make sure there are no lotions, oils, or sunscreen on the area. Lightly exfoliating a day before helps remove dead skin and gives the dye a better surface to bond with. Apply the henna paste in a thick, even layer. If the paste is too thin, the stain will be faint. Once dry, seal it with a mixture of lemon juice and sugar dabbed gently over the paste with a cotton ball.
After applying, leave the paste on for at least four to six hours. The longer you leave it, the darker the result. Keep the area warm and avoid getting it wet. When you are ready to remove the paste, scrape it off gently and avoid water for another 12 hours. Your stain will start orange and darken over the next two days. With a little patience and practice, you will be creating beautiful designs at home in no time.
